The Learner Perspective

The theory supporting the design and purpose of our website:Behaviorism, cognitivism, and constructivism are the three broad learning theories most often utilized in the creation of instructional environments. These theories, however, were developed in a time when learning was not impacted by technology (Sieman 2006). New learning theory is emerging.

Constructivism

Constructivism assumes that learners are not empty vessels to be filled with knowledge. Instead, learners are actively attempting to create meaning. Learners often select and pursue their own learning. Constructivist principles acknowledge that real-life learning is messy and complex (Sieman 2005).
On our web site, for you the learner we have tried to emulate this theory by creating a site which directs you to the paths you may like to take on your learning journey, based on your learning needs. Our site gives you the tools to create your own learning experience by focusing on your immediate goals and objectives and providing opportunities for life-long learning. It operates on the premises outlined by Siemens (2006)

·       Knowledge is no longer an object I simply store myself.

·    Creating connections to networks, people and devices is a new  knowledge

·    Knowing how to connect to knowledge and how to find it is new knowledge.

·   Knowing how to access, synthesize, store, retrieve, problem solve is new knowledge.

·   I store my knowledge in my friends.
